Kristen L. Sanford, PhD, PE - Student Chapter Liaison, DEI Coordinator

A Professor at Lafayette College in Easton, Dr. Sanford has held national leadership positions within ASCE, served on several national committees, and reviewed and served as an associate editor for the ASCE Journal of Infrastructure Systems. She was recently a co-Principal Investigator for a grant entitled “Building Capacity in a Community of Practice to Integrate DEI Into Infrastructure Education,” awarded by the National Science Foundation, with the goal of helping faculty across the United States incorporate issues of equity and justice in their teaching about infrastructure – and with a particular focus on the challenges of addressing institutional racism. On campus, Dr. Sanford chaired the Faculty Committee on Diversity, served as the faculty advisor to Lafayette’s SWE chapter, and leads efforts within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to rebuild an inclusive community post-pandemic, including through the development of a first-year seminar titled “Sustainable Cities: Urban Infrastructure and Equity.” Within the Lehigh Valley ASCE, Dr. Sanford completed a year-long Board effort to identify and adopt practices to improve justice, equity, diversity and inclusion within the Section -- helping us serve ALL our members better. She also serves as our official Liaison to the student chapters at Lafayette, Lehigh, and King’s.
